Project Description

BASE transformed the play yard at the FACES childcare and preschool facility in the Bayview neighborhood of San Francisco from a sea of rubber and plastic to a nature play oasis. BASE collaborated with numerous entities to make this project come to life, including Rocky Mountain Woodworks (RMW), SF Department of Rec and Park, SF Children and Nature Collaborative and the Low Income Investment Fund.

With logs repurposed from fallen or felled trees parks around the city, RMW created a play structure that can come to life in the kids’ imagination. A tilted log becomes a slide; the floor is a sea of lava; the entire structure becomes a pirate ship rolling on the waves. The new yard provides open ended play opportunities through spaces for being social and spaces for refuge; sensory stimulation through sand, gravel, wood chips, bark textures, plants, and more; places for kids to grow their own garden; challenges like balancing and jumping; music walls and art wall; and new trees for shade.
