Sun Valley Elementary
San Rafael, CA

Project Description
BASE collaborated with Multistudio Architects to design a nature-focused Transitional Kindergarten (TK) play yard at a sunny elementary school in San Rafael. The project includes a new 6,100-square- foot TK play yard serving the new classroom building, as well as enabling projects that relocated play structures, added play yard striping, shade structures, and fire access upgrades.
The design carefully preserves a mature existing tree that anchors the play space
and provides shade over a large portion of the yard, creating a comfortable and inviting environment for young learners. The play yard is nestled in new planting and bioretention areas to support stormwater management and enhance the landscape character of the site. Natural wood elements and play features were incorporated throughout the space to support exploration, sensory play, and connection to nature.
