Our ongoing work in designing early childhood playscapes reminds us that play is the essential way that we learn to communicate, collaborate, and connect.

 

BASE’s design for San Francisco’s Wu Yee Children’s Services Kirkwood Center completed construction in the spring of 2026. With dedicated spaces for infants,

toddlers, and preschool students, the nature-based playgrounds will replace 1/4 acre of aging synthetic materials & structures. The team sourced locally-harvested logs from SF’s Presidio forest and we designed new pollinator-friendly gardens for the campus.

 

Throughout the design process, we indulged in our own youthful creativity, dreaming up playful elements and environments that include a giant bird’s nest, a pump-driven rocky creek, log-based balance courses, and a towering

leaf-climber.
