Project Description

BASE is collaborating with FORA Architects and MidPenHousing on a new affordable, family-oriented housing development on Walnut Street in San Carlos, California. The project is designed toprovide a comfortable, high-quality living environment while respecting the surroundingneighborhood through appropriate setbacks, thoughtfully scaled buildings, and architecture thatcomplements the existing character of Walnut Street. Shared indoor and outdoor amenity spacesare integrated throughout the development to foster community and support residents of all ages.

BASE's scope includes the design of a second-floor residential courtyard featuring playopportunities for children of all ages, a BBQ lounge, a shaded gathering area with a pergola, adog relief area, and a smaller, more secluded patio for intimate gatherings. Along the streetfrontage, the landscape creates an active and welcoming public edge, while the site's stormwaterstrategy captures runoff in a mid-level flow-through planters at the back of the building, which alsoprovides tree screening along the southern property line. The project is currently in the earlycommunity engagement and entitlement phase, with continued collaboration plannedthroughout the design and development process.
