Cedar Rose Playground
Berkeley, CA
Project Description
Cedar Rose Playgrounds Renovation project is located at 1300 Rose Street between Rose Street and Cedar Street in Berkeley, CA. The playgrounds are part of Cedar Rose Park. The park features a picnic area with tables and seating, an open grass field, a restroom, accessible pathways, and sports courts to the north of Rose Street and to the south of Cedar Street. The northwest corner of the park is also home to the Ala Costa Centers, which offers after-school programs for neurodivergent
school-aged youths.
BASE team is designing the two playground areas- for the 5-12 school-age children area, which is adjacent to Rose Street and for the 2-5 tot lot area that is located at Cedar Street. Community meetings and outreach at the park are part of BASE’s process to hear children, parents, supervisors, and park visitors. These meetings inform the design and provide the team with good guidance of the play area uses.
The concept of the playground is based on the sailing in the East Bay and the idea of water transportation and water play. Most of the selected play structures will be made of wood and have natural appearance. At the fully enclosed tot lot will be boats, ocean creatures, spinners, sand play area with small ducks, and a charcoal drawing wall. The school-age children area will have a tall climbing structure with a slide. Swings will be placed at various places in both areas.
The proposed plant species to be California native and attract pollinators.
Some of the project goals are:
-
To increase play value
-
To preserve existing site features and structures
-
To improve drainage
-
And to provide community spaces
